In Memoriam: Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers

The Federation of International Polo mourns the passing of Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers, former President of FIP and a respected figure whose life was deeply intertwined with the development and governance of polo.
Nicholas served the sport across multiple generations and institutions. He was Chairman of Ham Polo Club from 1995 to 2018, Chairman of the Hurlingham Polo Association between 2009 and 2012, and President of the Federation of International Polo from 2014 to 2018. In each of these roles, he brought a clear sense of responsibility, professionalism, and long-term vision.
During his presidency at FIP, Nicholas played a key role in strengthening the Federation’s institutional structure. He supported the creation of a more professional administrative framework, promoted international cooperation, and oversaw the inclusion of new member nations, contributing to polo’s continued global expansion. His tenure reflected a belief that the sport’s future depended on strong governance, transparency, and collaboration between countries.
Beyond his administrative roles, Nicholas’ connection to polo was deeply personal. His journey in the sport began through a genuine love for horses and competition and evolved into a lifelong commitment that spanned playing, mentoring, and leadership. Those who worked alongside him remember his thoughtful approach, his respect for the game’s traditions, and his belief in protecting the spirit of amateur polo while guiding its modern development.
Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication that will remain part of the Federation’s history. The international polo community extends its condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of sharing the field and the work with him.
